In recent times, the electric vehicles have been hyped too much as future automotive, an eco-friendly and sustainable substitute for gas-powered cars. However, for me there few concerns about it, like the performance of electric cars over the long-term, including their resale value and the endurance of the lithium batteries. I have rewritten it with what is known now and how to judge an EV for long ownership in India.
Electric vehicles have been promoted as the sustainable future of driving. My hesitation was practical: how an EV performs over many years, what it will be worth when sold, and how long its lithium-ion battery will last.
How long do EV batteries last?
Evidence from EVs on the road for many years suggests batteries degrade gradually, typically keeping most of their capacity for well over a decade of normal use. Heat and frequent fast charging speed up wear. Manufacturers in India commonly offer battery warranties of around eight years or a set distance; check the exact terms for any model.
What about resale value?
The used EV market in India is still young, and resale values vary widely by brand and model. Buyers worry about battery health, which makes a battery health report valuable when selling. Strong warranties that transfer to new owners support resale.
How do you reduce battery wear?
- Charge at home on slower AC charging for daily use.
- Avoid keeping the battery at 100 percent for long periods.
- Limit frequent DC fast charging where possible.
- Park in shade in hot weather.
What is the total cost of ownership?
EVs usually cost more upfront but less to run, with cheaper electricity than fuel and fewer maintenance items. The saving grows with distance driven. Compare over the years you expect to keep the car.
Who should consider an EV now?
People with home or workplace charging, predictable daily distances and plans to keep the car for years. Frequent long highway trips depend on charging networks along your routes.
What should you check on a used EV?
A battery health report from the manufacturer or a service centre, the remaining battery warranty and whether it transfers, the charging history if available, and the car's software update status.
Were my concerns fair?
Yes, and they still guide a good purchase: check warranty, charging and resale before buying.
