Updated September 2026: in 2022 my 2012 MacBook Pro began shutting down at random and would not restart as usual, needing an SMC reset. I have rewritten it into a guide to diagnosing random shutdowns on an older Mac, and when it is time to replace it.
I had relied on my 2012 MacBook Pro for years. One day, while working on a personal project, it shut itself down and would not restart normally, unlike the times I had pushed its memory with many apps. After an SMC reset it came back, but the incident was a warning.
What causes random shutdowns on older Macs?
- A worn or failing battery, which cannot deliver power under load.
- Overheating, from dust-clogged fans or dried thermal paste.
- Logic board faults, common in ageing machines.
- Software issues, less often, after updates.
What should you try first?
Back up immediately. Then check battery condition in the battery menu or System Information, reset the SMC on Intel Macs as I did, and run Apple Diagnostics by restarting while holding D. Clean dust from vents if the Mac runs hot.
When is a repair worth it?
A new battery or a fan cleaning is inexpensive and often solves the problem. A logic board repair on an old Mac is usually not worth the cost; the price can approach that of a refurbished newer machine.
What does age mean for security?
A 2012 MacBook Pro no longer receives current macOS security updates. Using it for banking and browsing carries more risk every year, which is a strong reason to replace it even if it still works.
How do you move to a new Mac?
Use Migration Assistant from your Time Machine backup or directly from the old Mac. Your files, apps and settings transfer in a few hours.
What did the shutdown teach me?
That a backup is the first response to any warning sign. My old Mac recovered that time; the next failure was not so kind.
